SUMMARY:Box Making Using Antique Japanese Paper with Tatsuhiko Niijima
DESCRIPTION:Tatsuhiko Niijima from Japan for an exclusive hands-on workshop. Craft your own elegant box using rare antique Japanese colored paper\, learning traditional techniques as you assemble a pre-cut core and carefully apply each sheet. This intimate workshop offers a rare chance to experience the beauty and subtlety of Japanese paper artistry firsthand. \nIn partnership with the Sonoma Community Center is pleased to offer three special workshops on February 14th\, given by guest artists visiting from Japan. Register for more than one workshop and receive a 10% discount. Sign up for all three to make it a full day experience at 20% off! \nThis workshop focuses on making boxes using vintage Japanese colored paper. Both the size and construction method of the boxes are carefully designed to minimize paper waste. The core structure of each box is created using a contemporary bookbinding technique known as the V-cut\, which allows the corners to be exceptionally sharp and beautifully finished. We hope you will discover a unique charm in these boxes\, which combine old materials with new techniques–offering a character different from that of brand-new boxes. \nEach set consists of a box base and a matching lid. You may choose from three available sizes\, as well as your preferred colored paper from approximately ten different varieties of vintage Japanese paper. During the workshop\, you will assemble pre-cut core components and use a traditional Japanese brush to apply paste and carefully mount the colored paper onto the surface of the box. \nThis workshop is recommended for individuals with an interest in vintage objects\, traditional materials\, and Japanese tools. It is suitable for participants aged 13 and over\, as the process involves delicate work with thin paper and requires careful handling.

SUMMARY:Spiral Bookmaking with Ryoko Adachi
DESCRIPTION:Workshop exploring a spiral book structure folded from two long sheets. Participants insert colors and discover how they emerge through the form. \n\n\nIn partnership with the Sonoma Community Center is pleased to offer three special workshops on February 14th\, given by guest artists visiting from Japan. Register for more than one workshop and receive a 10% discount. Sign up for all three to make it a full day experience at 20% off! \nThis book was designed by Adachi for a work inspired by DNA and the growth of the giant beanstalk. Its defining feature is a dynamic spiral structure created solely by folding two long sheets of paper\, without the use of glue or thread. In this workshop\, participants work with two long sheets of paper and thin colored papers. One of the long sheets is translucent and folded in half lengthwise. Participants freely insert colored paper between the folded layers. As the structure is folded and completed\, participants discover how the inserted colors shift and emerge through the spiral form. \nAnyone interested in making things can participate. No prior bookmaking experience is required.

DESCRIPTION:Hands-on workshop introducing Matsunaga’s Waterwheel Binding: build a simple model\, explore variations\, and spark ideas for artists. \nIn partnership with the Sonoma Community Center is pleased to offer three special workshops on February 14th\, given by guest artists visiting from Japan. Register for more than one workshop and receive a 10% discount. Sign up for all three to make it a full day experience at 20% off! \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn the structure of Matsunaga’s original bookbinding technique “Waterwheel Binding” by creating a simple model. SUMMARY:Community "Book Becoming Mushroom" at SCC
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\nJoin us for a unique and interactive community event celebrating creativity\, nature\, and the wonders of fungi! We are thrilled to kick off a one-of-a-kind project: the creation of a Mushroom Book\, led by visiting artist Hiroko Fukumoto from Kyoto\, Japan. This free\, all-ages event invites you to help bring this fascinating art piece to life. \nAt the heart of this event\, you’ll be part of the process of transforming ordinary paperback books into living\, growing works of art. Using rice bran paste and mushroom spores\, participants will apply the paste between the pages of the books\, creating a fertile environment for mushrooms to grow over the next five weeks. Your hands-on involvement will help inoculate the books and set the stage for this organic spectacle. A few lucky participants will get to take home one of the books \nA large Mushroom Book will be displayed in the Sonoma Community Center foyer\, where it will be nurtured daily with misting\, and you’ll be able to watch as the mushrooms begin to sprout\, evolve\, and mature over time. A livestream camera will be set up for remote viewers to check in and witness the transformation from anywhere! \nCome be part of this imaginative\, living art experiment and witness the beauty of nature merging with the creative process. Whether you’re a seasoned artist\, a nature enthusiast\, or simply curious about the unexpected wonders of the world\, this event is for you. Don’t miss out on this special opportunity to participate in a truly unique experience! \nThis event is a fun\, hands-on experience for all ages and no prior art or mushroom-growing knowledge is required. \nWe can’t wait to see you there and share in this living art journey. You’re invited to return on March 2 from 2-4pm for a celebration of the fully-grown book. \n\nPlease RSVP here to witness the magic unfold!

SUMMARY:Book Becoming Art 『芸術になった本』at SVMA
DESCRIPTION:This major exhibition presents an exquisite collection of approximately 40 contemporary hand-crafted artist books. All of the artwork is inspired by Japanese aesthetics with the majority of pieces coming from Japan. The exhibition highlights how Japanese artistry combines traditional elements such as paper and calligraphy with modern themes and techniques\, particularly in bookmaking and print. These limited-edition and one-of-a-kind works celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Japan and its influence on artistic expression\, showcasing a blend of sophistication and creativity. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nThis exhibition introduces audiences to an art form that many are not aware of—the art of bookmaking.  It also features extraordinary Japanese and Japanese-inspired artists who are little known in the U.S.  The multi-layers of expression of this artmaking will enlighten and captivate viewers. Beyond the “literalness” of books—the exhibition’s eclectic blend of artists—all leaders in this art form—stretch the understanding of what a book can be. \nGuest Curators: Maki Aizawa\, Simon J. Blattner\, and Barbara Wells. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nOpening Reception:\nSaturday\, January 25\, 5-7 PM \n\nRegister
